In the 1960s, as more refugees began entering Denmark in larger numbers, and being at the forefront of the Danish Refugee Council, Arne Piel Christensen contributed to advocating and making the refugee cause better known and understood among the Danish population.

He seriously put the refugee cause on the agenda in Denmark, and for three decades he defended the rights of refugees and fought for aid to refugees in the world's trouble spots. He led the foundation for the global organisation that DRC is today", says Secretary General, Charlotte Slente.

After his retirement, Arne Piel Christensen continued his work for and commitment to the refugee cause. He was appointed as director of the international organisation OSCE, where was involved in building democracy in Kosovo following the Balkan conflict in the 1990s. He held this position for three years until 2001.
