Halgan, meaning "Struggle" in Somali, is a women-led organization founded and directed by Anab Gedi Mohamed. Initially formed as a self-help group in 2017, it transitioned into a community-based organization in 2022.
At the beginning, Halgan operated without an office or dedicated space. However, with the support of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), the organization secured an office in IFO that was fully renovated and equipped.
The office now includes essential furniture, a desktop with internet access, and lockable cabinets that provide a professional environment and safeguard important documents. The cool, comfortable space offers a productive setting in contrast to the harsh external conditions, enabling the team to work effectively.
This support has positioned Halgan ahead of other Refugee-Led Organizations (RLOs) in the area, allowing them to undertake key initiatives in IFO. Their main activities focus on raising awareness about Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) prevention, promoting peacebuilding and conflict management, and providing mentorship programs.
Through their partnership with DRC and ECHO, Halgan also benefited from capacity-building in human resources, finance, and supply chain management. These improvements led to a 2023 assessment by UNHCR, which awarded them a six-month grant to implement a project supporting girls, including the recruitment of six mentors.
The skills and knowledge gained have strengthened their internal systems, enhanced their procurement processes, and helped them develop a comprehensive HR manual. ECHO funding also allowed the recruitment of two additional staff members.
Despite these achievements, Halgan remains eager to participate in further exchange programs and cross-learning opportunities to continue building on their successes and enhance their practical skills.
