Celebrating the dedication of our volunteers and community incentive workers: A story of resilience and hope

Posted on 11 Nov 2024

In the heart of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) East Africa and Great Lakes region, we witness the incredible contributions of over 3,000 community incentive workers and volunteers who work tirelessly on the front lines.

Many of these individuals are refugees themselves, dedicating their time, energy, and skills to uplift and support their communities, often under challenging circumstances. Their work embodies resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to community solidarity—a vital component we strive to strengthen every day.

These volunteers and incentive workers are instrumental to DRC's mission. Their dedication shines through every program and initiative we undertake, as they help foster an environment of hope and solidarity within refugee camps and communities across the region. One particularly inspiring story is that of Raphael Kalembe, a young Congolese refugee who has devoted himself to improving the lives of those around him.

Raphael Kalembe: A story of determination

Raphael arrived in Burundi in 2019 after fleeing conflict in his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Upon arrival, he found himself in a new, unfamiliar environment, he was guided to the N’yankanda refugee camp in Ruyigi, where he adapted to a new life, learning about the local culture, customs, and history.

Adjusting to camp life was no small feat; the challenges were immense, and Raphael grappled with the stresses and uncertainties many refugees face. Yet, in the face of hardship, Raphael found support and guidance from organizations like the Danish Refugee Council.

DRC staff welcomed him warmly, explained their work, and provided critical aid to help him and others in the camp. Inspired by their dedication, Raphael decided to step up and assist his community in any way he could. He quickly became a volunteer with DRC, driven by a desire to give back and play a role in uplifting his community.

Dedication in action: Building a better community

Through his volunteer work, Raphael participated in a range of initiatives to improve the lives of his fellow refugees. His efforts included permaculture gardening, which not only brought fresh produce to the camp but also taught residents valuable skills in sustainable agriculture.

Raphael also facilitated workshops aimed at skills-building, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience within the camp.

His work has brought about significant physical and educational improvements in the camp. From small gardens that brighten the surroundings and provision of fresh food to skills development sessions that empower individuals with new opportunities, Raphael’s contributions have left an indelible mark on the community.

Building on community solidarity

Raphael’s journey underscores the significance of community solidarity mechanisms within refugee camps.

His story highlights the vital role that volunteers play in these mechanisms, offering not only immediate support but also building a foundation for long-term development.

The Danish Refugee Council is deeply grateful for the efforts of Raphael and the thousands of volunteers and community incentive workers across the region. They are the backbone of our collective work, embodying resilience and hope in their dedication to their communities.

As we celebrate Raphael’s story and the contributions of all our volunteers, we are reminded of the incredible strength that arises when individuals come together to support one another.

Through our ongoing efforts to empower these community workers, we aim to continue strengthening the solidarity and resilience that make our mission possible. Thank you to each volunteer and incentive worker who continue to inspire and uplift, helping to create a brighter future for all.
