In the heart of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) East Africa and Great Lakes region, we witness the incredible contributions of over 3,000 community incentive workers and volunteers who work tirelessly on the front lines.
Many of these individuals are refugees themselves, dedicating their time, energy, and skills to uplift and support their communities, often under challenging circumstances. Their work embodies resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to community solidarity—a vital component we strive to strengthen every day.
These volunteers and incentive workers are instrumental to DRC's mission. Their dedication shines through every program and initiative we undertake, as they help foster an environment of hope and solidarity within refugee camps and communities across the region. One particularly inspiring story is that of Raphael Kalembe, a young Congolese refugee who has devoted himself to improving the lives of those around him.
Raphael Kalembe: A story of determination
Raphael arrived in Burundi in 2019 after fleeing conflict in his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Upon arrival, he found himself in a new, unfamiliar environment, he was guided to the N’yankanda refugee camp in Ruyigi, where he adapted to a new life, learning about the local culture, customs, and history.
Adjusting to camp life was no small feat; the challenges were immense, and Raphael grappled with the stresses and uncertainties many refugees face. Yet, in the face of hardship, Raphael found support and guidance from organizations like the Danish Refugee Council.
DRC staff welcomed him warmly, explained their work, and provided critical aid to help him and others in the camp. Inspired by their dedication, Raphael decided to step up and assist his community in any way he could. He quickly became a volunteer with DRC, driven by a desire to give back and play a role in uplifting his community.
