A young girl from Hagadera aiming for the world stage
Foos Mohamed, a refugee in Hagadera Refugee Camp, Dadaab, never imagined she would become the backbone of her family. Originally from Kismayo, Somalia, she and her family fled to Kenya in 2006 in search of safety and stability. Now, at 23, she is not only the second eldest of eight siblings but also their sole breadwinner following the tragic passing of her father two years ago.
Her life took a turning point when she enrolled in a digital skills training course under ABLI-G project funded by the European Union. For nine months, Foos committed herself to mastering skills that could change her family’s future. By the end of the nine months, she had completed the program and was ready to dive into the world of online freelancing. She landed her first freelance job on Upwork.
“It felt unreal,” Foos recalls.
“That first project may have been small, but to me, it was proof that I could succeed, despite my circumstances.” Since then, she has expanded her work to platforms like LinkedIn and Proz, earning an average of 300 USD per month. This income supports her family by supplementing food rations, purchasing school supplies for her siblings, and covering her own personal needs.
However, working as a freelancer in a refugee camp comes with its share of challenges.
“I don’t own a laptop, so I often have to borrow one to work, which is not reliable” Foos explains.
“And with the power outages in the camp, I’m limited to working until 11 p.m. It’s frustrating, knowing I could accomplish more if I had the right resources.”
Despite these obstacles, Foos remains determined to improve both her own life and her family's. Her dreams extend far beyond the borders of Hagadera.
She envisions a future where her family is financially stable, with her siblings receiving the education they deserve and living a better quality of life. For herself, Foos aspires to improve her skills, own a laptop and increase her earnings, with the ultimate goal of traveling and seeing the world.
Her message to young people is one of perseverance and hope:
“There are so many opportunities out there, but you have to go after them. Keep pushing, keep practicing, and never give up. The time is now.” Concludes Foos beaming with a smile.
Foos’ story is a powerful reminder of how resilience and determination can lead to a brighter future, even in the most challenging circumstances.
